You two just started this next chapter, and before life gets busy with wedding planning, I think it's worth pausing to celebrate exactly where you are right now, just engaged, just excited, beaming every time you look down at that ring.
I usually tell couples to book their engagement session a few months before the wedding. It gives us room to plan around good weather, and if you're using these images for save-the-dates or your wedding website, it leaves plenty of time to get them back before you need them.
Picking a location is honestly one of my favorite parts of planning together. Some couples love the energy of being downtown, old buildings, brick sidewalks, a little bit of city buzz around them. Others want somewhere quiet, a marsh at sunset, a backyard, a spot that actually means something to the two of you. There's no wrong answer here, I just want it to feel like your relationship, not a generic photo location.
Once we're actually shooting, I try to keep things loose. I'll walk you through some simple prompts, but most of the shots I love best happen in the moments in between, when you're not thinking about the camera at all. If you two are laughing at something only you understand, that's usually when I'm getting the best photos.
This season doesn't come around again. Enjoy it, let it be a little goofy, and let's get some photos that actually capture what it feels like right now.
